your hands whisper against my sides and along my face, although they do not claim my skin as your own so often anymore. i watch them clench and curl, pick up knives and chop limes for the drinks they will lift to your mouth. you don't look right with cigarettes perched between your fingers, but i appreciate the effort. pens, though, and weaponry, wine bottles and silverware all fit perfectly. strangers comment on the softness of your overlarge palms, your smooth fingernails. they don't know the work your hands have finished or all they'll never do.

As a girl you were a dancer, and you told me once, "you have to learn to fall." Was that the only lesson that stuck? Can't you remember the joy of a pirouette, the strength in a plié? All these years you've taught me nothing but how to fall. That isn't the whole truth; from you I learned the beauty of duty and sacrifice and all the ways a word can be twisted and transformed. when the world crowds us into a his-and-hers package i want to set it on fire and watch my hesitation turn into ash which would be worse: you cast as the love of a life too chaotic for just one, or my transforming into background noise, my poems and gifts all syndicated reruns? the closest you can get to belonging to another is placing your belongings alongside each other and not minding the proximity. i suppose i don't mind yours.

Have you guys seen http://transfinite.dreamwidth.org/215469.html ? No? Here's the gist of it: Transfinite was a deviantART user who wished to specify its gender as "other," since it primarily identifies as neutrois. It realized the "unspecified/other" option had disappeared from deviantART and fell down a rabbit hole of terrible customer service, where the options were to choose a gender that did not fit or LEAVE THE WEBSITE. No sincere apologies... in fact, it was disdainfully told that if it was neither male nor female, it must be a hermaphrodite. Wut.
